With road racing illegal in England, the Brooklands circuit, near Weybridge in Surrey, was built in 1907 in the grounds of landowner Hugh Locke-King’s country home to cater for the burgeoning interest in the new game of motor sport. The lap distance was slightly in excess of three miles, the circuit’s most famous features being the 30 foot high cement banking sections at either end of the track, which enabled cars to fly round at speeds of 120mph. It was not a circuit for the faint hearted.
Brooklands quickly established itself as a highly popular venue, particularly with the London sporting luxury car dealers, and a number of meetings were held throughout the year. Among the more colourful regulars was Count Louis Zborowski whose father, Count Eliot Zborowski, had been killed at a 1903 hill climb when his sleeve caught in the hand throttle of the Bentley for sale that he was driving. In the years following the First World War, Count Louis built up a string of huge used Mercedes benz for sale, which were affectionately known as Chitty Chitty Bang Bangs because of the deafening noise made by their exhausts.
Chitty I boasted a 23 litre airship engine, identical to that used in Zeppelins, and Zborowski used to drive the monster Merc over to Brooklands from his estate in Canterbury, probably frightening the life out of other road users. He always dressed his crew in a uniform of black shirts and oversize checked caps, specially imported from Palm Beach.
He was, to put it mildly, an enthusiastic privateer, somewhat in the image of Mr Toad. He and Chitty I trundled up from Kent for the 1922 autumn meeting but the combination had a nasty experience during one of the practice sessions. He was speeding around the track in familiar style when he suddenly lost control and the car struck a bridge parapet at the top of the banking, slid backwards down the concrete, went clean through the timing box and off the circuit. Zborowski was unhurt, but timekeeper Chamberlain hid behind the timing box when he saw Chitty about to leave the track, and lost a number of fingers in trying to take belated evasive action.
Another track official, Cann, threw himself into a ditch and was happy to see Chitty leap over him. Chitty I would never race again, but Zborowski already had a successor lined up, Chitty II. In the meantime, fully recovered, he drove a Benz in the 100 Short Handicap. A field of 11 cars were started at intervals according to their engine capacity. John Duff’s white Rolls Royce for sale was on scratch while Zborowski set off 12 seconds earlier. Duff did a lap of 114.49 mph and Zborowski lapped at 103.76 mph but the handicap system, a familiar feature of races at Brooklands, meant that neither could match F.C. Clement’s blue Bentley, which won from a Vauxhall driven by M.C. Park. Unfortunately Duff failed to pull up after crossing the finish line and flew over the top of the Members’ banking, wrecking the Benz.
Although Duff was taken to hospital, his passenger, an immaculately dressed young stranger who had begged a lift in the paddock, was unhurt until the car’s petrol tank, which had lodged in a tree, fell on him and laid him out. As for Zborowski, he was killed driving a Mercedes in the 1924 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Eerily, he was wearing the same cufflinks that had caused his father’s death. The accident had nothing to do with the cuff links, but it is just how things seem to go in life at times.

I work in a warehouse district and we have are always having weird stuff “dropped off,” ie abandoned, on our property. It’s such a hassle when this happens because we actually have to take possession of it before we can even get rid of it.
